What is 811?
811 is the national call-before you dig phone number. Before digging, call to request that the locations of buried utilities near your work site be marked with flags or paint so you do not unintentionally disturb underground utility lines while working.
When should I call?
Call a few business days before you plan to dig. Check with your state to learn the specific amount of notice you must provide.
What info should I have before I call?
The operator will ask you the address of your work site, including the nearest cross street and the county. They will also ask about the type of work you are conducting and the exact area where you will dig.
What should I do after I call?
Utility companies will need a few days to respond to your request and marked buried lines. Sit tight until they complete their work. Once you begin your project, dig carefully around utility markers.
